The 2010 Marathon will share the same start as the half marathon at the Hermit Interchange, just west of the Bright Angel Lodge at an elevation of 6842 ft. Traveling up Hermit Road runners will pass First Trail View Overlook just after mile 1. Runners will remain on the road as they pass by Maricopa Point; as they approach Powell Memorial Overlook (mile 2.15) runners will follow the road into the overlook, offering a vista of the canyon and the memorial on the right before heading back out to the Hermit Road. At Mohave Point runners will once again leave the road and run into the overlook to get incredible views of the Grand Canyon. At mile 4.3 runners will pass the Abyss, which has an approximate vertical drop of 3000 ft straight down over Monument Creek. At 5.19 miles runners will leave the road and get on a paved "greenway" that follows the old historic roadbed for approximately 1.4 miles until it intersects back with the Hermit Road. Runners then get on to the bike lane that turns into Pima Point (the approximate half way point for the half marathon). On the far side of Pima Point runners will head onto the second Greenway continuing west. At mile 8 runners will arrive at Hermits Rest (bathrooms) and the Hermits Rest Bell Arch where they will turn around and retrace their steps back towards Grand Canyon Village. Mile 13.75 sets the runners up for a little over six miles of down hill dropping nearly 700 ft in elevation from one of the courses high points at 7125 ft down to 6435 ft. During this decent the course will leave the Hermit Road and turn right dropping down into the onto Rowe Well Road drainage. Runners will immediately see the finish line for the half marathon and mile 16 for the marathoners. At mile 16.33 the pavement ends and runners continue onto dirt and gravel road surfaces. At mile 17 runners will pass a mule crossing followed by the first of three railroad crossings. Mile 19.18 the course crosses over the first cattle guard exiting the National Park and heading into the Kaibab National Forrest on USFS road 328A. Mile 20 brings the runners onto USFS road 328 heading towards Tusayan and the junction with Highway 64. At the Highway runners turn right towards Tusayan for the last paved mile and the finish line at the National Geographic Visitor Center IMAX.
