WOW!!! What else can we say but wow and thank you! The first Grand Canyon Marathon was a huge success and we continue to receive positive feedback from our runners every day. This event would not have been possible without the help we received financially from many businesses and individuals in Grand Canyon Village and Tusayan and the incredible support we received from over 100 volunteers on race day. The feedback so far from the runners highlights how much they appreciated all of the support and encouragement they received on the course. Great Job!
Our marathon team will be meeting within the next couple weeks to recap the event and the feedback we are receiving. We have sent out a survey to all of our runners asking for input and any ideas that might improve the event in 2009. We will also be talking with the businesses that helped support us. All of this information will be taken very seriously and become a part of our planning for next year. There are areas that are in obvious need of improvement for next year. The most important area in need of improvement we have identified is better communication with our volunteers.
While you did a fantastic job we believe we could have helped you more. Next year we will have meetings with volunteers prior to the race and go over what we need from each area, explain clearly what you can expect and, where appropriate, take the volunteers out on the course to show each group where they have been assigned. Details of who will work each area, how many volunteers will be needed and other specific details will be addressed down the road as the plans for 2009 begin.
In early January we hope to select the date for next year and begin the permit process. The event will take place in the fall as one of our goals is to help bring people to Grand Canyon and our businesses during what is normally a very slow time of year.
Proceeds from the race were over $6000 and will help to support the Rec. Center and the scholarship. We are excited about establishing the new scholarship program before the end of the school year. We plan to have more runners in 2009 that will allow us to make an even larger donation to the Rec. Center.
