The 2008 Grand Canyon Marathon was a great community effort providing a unique experience to runners from around the world. Fifty four runners from four countries and nine states came to the Grand Canyon to run the 26.2 mile course that took them along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, through Kaibab National Forest, and into the town of Tusayan. There is no other marathon like the Grand Canyon Marathon. The namesake of the race, the Grand Canyon, forms the back drop for the first half; while Kaibab National Forest's ponderosa pines and pinion junipers surround the entire course. The entire course hovers near 7,000 feet of elevation. It is an environmentally friendly event that offers a different way of experiencing this part of the country.
The Grand Canyon Marathon proved to be a huge success, not only for the many runners, but also the volunteers who helped during the event. It proved once again why the Grand Canyon Community is so great! The 2008 marathon was a community effort largely sponsored and supported by local business, organizations, and individuals. Over one hundred volunteers, mostly from the Grand Canyon Community and a few from as far away as Tucson, came together to make this event a success.
The Race Team is proud that the event provided a venue to show our strong community spirit. The team is even more proud that the goals set at the start of the planning process were accomplished. The 2008 Grand Canyon Marathon raised more than $6,000 for the Grand Canyon Community Recreation Center's programs to include an athletic scholarship.
