2012 Grand Canyon Marathon: Not Approved
To: Grand Canyon Marathon Runners, Volunteers and Friends
Date: March 29, 2012
We are disappointed to announce that our “Special Use Permit” for the Grand Canyon Marathon was not approved by the National Park Service. We feel as though this decision will set the precedent for the future and this will mark an end to the Grand Canyon Marathon.
We were however, fortunate enough to have permits for the Grand Canyon Marathon during 2008, 2010 and 2011 and feel as though we exceeded our objectives of providing a positive and rewarding experience for the runners, visitors, volunteers, and everyone else that was involved. This event was also a great opportunity for many of these new visitors to see and experience the beautiful Grand Canyon, the historic Hermit Road and the surrounding forest of the Kaibab National Forest.
The Grand Canyon Marathon has steadily grown over the years and had become one of the best events in the area for the Grand Canyon Community. As many of you know, the Marathon was conducted with an all-volunteer staff and was creating a strong unity within our community.
Proceeds from the Marathon were designated to provide scholarships for Grand Canyon High School graduating seniors to help them attend a college or university of their choice and was also used for new exercise equipment for the Grand Canyon Community Recreation Center.
In closing, we would like to say “thank you” to the National Park Service, the runners, volunteers, visitors, and everyone else that has been associated with the Grand Canyon Marathon for their support and help throughout the past 3 years. We are disappointed that the Grand Canyon Marathon has come to an end, but as with all races, there is a finish line.
We feel as though we were all winners and it was a great race!
Thanks again to everyone.
